How Do Bonus Deductions and Tax Work in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, your annual performance or festive bonus is not entirely yours to keep immediately. Just like your monthly wages, bonus payments are subject to mandatory statutory deductions and progressive income tax. Understanding how these deductions are calculated helps you manage your expectations and budget effectively.

EPF (Employees Provident Fund) Deductions

EPF contributions are legally required for bonus payments. The standard employee share (typically 11%) will be deducted directly from your gross bonus amount. Meanwhile, your employer must also contribute their respective share (usually 12% or 13%) based on your monthly wage tier. This increases your retirement savings package significantly.

Income Tax & Accumulated PCB

A bonus is classified as additional income, meaning it is subject to progressive income tax rates. Employers compute this using the LHDN Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB) formula, which simulates your annual tax bracket by adding the bonus to your regular salary. As a result, the month you receive your bonus usually incurs a higher tax rate deduction.
