In Malaysia, Sales and Service Tax (SST) is a single-stage tax system that replaced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2018. Unlike GST which was a multi-stage value-added tax, SST is only charged once: either at the manufacturing/import stage (Sales Tax) or at the point of service delivery to the consumer (Service Tax).
Sales Tax is levied on taxable goods manufactured locally in Malaysia or imported from overseas. The rate is typically set at 5% or 10% depending on the class of goods, while basic necessities and food ingredients are generally exempt from Sales Tax.
Service Tax is charged on specific taxable services provided in Malaysia. The baseline service tax is 6% (e.g. for food & beverage in restaurants). Beginning March 2024, the service tax rate was raised to 8% for other professional services, logistics, and telecommunications.
